TREND REPORT: Alice in Wonderland as Fashion's New Muse

With Tim Burton's heavily anticipated, and ever so enchanting film, Alice in Wonderland, finally debuting in cinemas Friday, March 5th, it comes as no surprise on just how pleased the fashion crowd must be. After all, this classically iconic Lewis Carroll fantasy hit has not only been revived into the minds and hearts of many-but also comes back with a special, highly fashion-forward twist, resulting in the cinematic beauty and rather trippy adventurous nature of its iconic and stylish characters. Whether it's the pure, misty air of the White Queen, the sweet, angelic nature of Alice, the evident passionate obsession of the colour red by the Queen of Hearts, the vintage pocket watch-wearing Rabbit, or the all-out wonder and amazement of the Mad Hatter's many frocks and accessories, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland has indeed reintroduced such characters with a chic, over-the-top touch of bewilderment.

Personally, I'm not sure whether it's the use of significant charms that I love the most, the intricately layered, statement-making silver necklaces of keys, hats, thimbles, and keyholes (which I'd rock with a simple white tank and jeans), the beautifully coloured use of red hearts (especially the earrings that I'd show off with my hair pulled back in a stylish chignon), but whatever the case may be, I'm simply fixated on this special Tom Binns line.

Getting My Mandarina Ducks In Line: How I'd Rock These Handbags Now

Although the ridiculously shivery NYC weather still has us all bundled up in heavy wool trenches, snuggly thick scarves, and chunky knit sweaters, it's not surprising how (around this time of year) many are preparing for their annual closet revamp in anticipation for the warmer, cheerier months of Spring to move on up.

Naturally, with this in mind, I've inevitably started drafting a new roster of some of my Spring closet essentials, and one of the tops on my "To Scoop" list is a luxuriously delicious handbag (or maybe two) from the luxe Italian label, Mandarina Duck. Interestingly, although this label is an undoubted hit in Europe, it's popularity is slowly creeping its way to the US. And personally, I just love scoping out incredible high-end designer labels that are relatively under the radar. The calfskin leather on these precious beauties is quite exceptional, which makes the process of narrowing down which ones I want a bit tough. However, with the help of my "style gurus," Sienna Miller, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Alexa Chung, choosing which I'd like the most might makes this process a bit easier:



(Surprisingly, after rummaging my closet, I realized that I don't own a ivory-coloured leather bag. The style and colour of this Mandarina Duck drawstring natural shoulder bag has me channeling a laid back, smart Brit look (as Sienna might do) with a slight "nautical" element. I'd rock this handbag with a striped boat neck top, navy blue boyfriend blazer, and acid skinny jeans. Brilliant!)



(Or perhaps, should I go with Mandarina Duck's versatile black satchel? I can rock an easy, breezy day look (MK style) with my denim shirt, white blazer, and straw hat, or change up the denim and hat for a black tank and simple wavy locks for a night look. This satchel can be rocked with virtually anything!)

(Channeling the quirkier chic gal in me, "a la Alexa Chung", I was also thinking of copping this lovely Mandarina Duck red satchel to match up with my vintage leopard sweater, tweed skirt, trouser socks, and wooden platforms. The fun, harmonizing colour schemes of this overall look makes me eye this bag in particular. It has an uncommon, cheery quality. Bless its heart!)

Tim Burton's premiere of Alice in Wonderland is fast approaching and I'm all about the hype! With a starring cast that includes Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and Helena Bonham, this movie is sure to be cinematic magic. Not only is the film on my radar, but also all of the outrageously fun and funky accessories coming along with it. My favorite being "trash to treasure" jewelry designer Tom Binns. Where The Heart Is (at Sir Alistair Rai)

As we blissfully await in anxious anticipation for the big V DAY, I think it's safe to say that my heart and mind have currently been all about "pretty in pink" things and lovey-dovey kinds of gestures. I just can't seem to help my sappy, clichéd mentality these past few days. Sorry people. Interestingly though, this highly romantic state of mind is inevitably trickling down to my innate fashion senses, leading me to scope out some hot, must-have pieces for the month of February, which just might add a little loving smile to my closet.

After doing my ritual visits to the Fashion & Style section of the NY Times, I was pleasantly greeted by an enticing article featuring Sir Alistair Rai's sweet new accessories (which I must get my hands on, pronto!). Clearly, at first glance, I've instantly fallen for her Tri Mantra Love Scarf and Honeymoon Clutch. With the subtle, alluring designs of "love" and a heart etched on the corner of each piece, I might have no other option than to make my Valentine's Day purchases as a little gift to myself. For one, I love the laid back ease and colour of Rai's lovely scarf, and the vintage photo element featured on her chic black and white Honeymoon clutch. Who Wore It Best: Olivia Palermo v. AnnaLynne Mccord

If these ladies have anything to do with the economy over the next few seasons, the power ring will replace the power suit and style will save us all. 

Olivia Palermo and Annalynne Mccord are both known for their smash television hits, The City and 90210, as well as their killer sense of style. Olivia is an Upper East Side socialite who has a personal stylist at Bergdorf Goodman on speed dial and closet of blazers on continual rotation. AnnaLynne, on the other hand, plays a California girl who counts skin tight dresses and bikinis as acceptable business attire.

We all love Drew's sense of style and her carefree spirit, yet something was missing this past weekend when Drew emerged victorious, for the second time, onstage. Playing Stylist With My Kooba

With Minkoff's Linear Stud Nikki Black Cat, not only does it convey that edgy, rocker vibe, which adds a bit of "POW" to any closet, but it also maintains itself as a must-have staple piece that goes with virtually anything you throw on. In anticipation of Sunday night's Golden Globes, we put some of last year's favorite red carpet looks to the test. As I peruse all the frilly, vibrant colour palettes and styles of Matta's sweet, "angelically-infused" scarves, I can't help imagining myself copping one in every single texture, design, and ombre-styled hue, sweeping it around my neck, while retreating to one of my personal, laidback "ultra-chill" spots and unwinding with a cup of tea, or possibly a glass of wine at hand. As silly as it may sound, these are one of the little, heavenly images I like to make for myself when I find precious, chic pieces that inspire me.

It's no doubt how Cristina Gitti, founder and designer of Matta, prides herself on spot-on, uniquely handmade designs, which prove that each and every piece brings along something quite special to the table. I can't seem to place my finger on it-- whether it's the use of colours, especially the light ombre, transitioning shades of mauve or citrus, frilly, pom pom features of Matta's Dupatta scarves, or simply the designer's overall approach to free-flowing, beautiful designs that each reflect Gitti's inspirations through her many travels.

Nowadays, whenever I make my little fashion "personal, must-have" purchases I tend to place a bit more thought and emphasis into what I buy, not so much on whether it's the new trend of the season (so I must have it), but rather the quality, thought, and special beauty that were established in it's work. While many of us at one point or another used to be fashion "pack rats" for the sake of our wardrobes (I know I have!), it's a much better feeling these days to actually appreciate a timeless piece of fashion that possesses some character and come away feeling fulfilled with an exceptional purchase -- and Gitti's Matta scarves simply convey these thoughts of mine in every sense of the word.

We are so excited we found this great skull necklace to wear for Halloween! It's designed by Jessica Kagan Cushman and is an awesome piece of her Fall collection. We were looking for something our customer's could wear out that was still in the spirit of Halloween but also really stylish. The necklace is all white and really pops with black on underneath it or on just bare skin.
